A hard-fought encounter in slippery conditions saw Horsham U16s maintain their undefeated streak with a dramatic last-minute victory over a resilient Chichester side.
First Half: In slippery and cold conditions, the opening minutes tested Horsham’s defensive structure, with a number of players making crucial early tackles to keep Chichester at bay. Both teams struggled with handling errors, leading to dropped balls and numerous turnovers. Despite the mistakes, the match was intensely competitive, with powerful rucking from both sides ensuring possession was fiercely contested. A number of penalties were creeping into the game by both sides for handling errors and infringements at the ruck, and in general play. Chichester eventually broke the deadlock with a well-worked try by their forwards, despite some rugged Horsham defence. The conversion attempt was missed, leaving the score at 0-5. Horsham responded with sustained pressure inside Chichester’s 22 but were unable to convert their opportunities, thwarted by impressive defensive resilience and counter-rucking from Chichester.
Half-Time Score: Horsham 0 - 5 Chichester
Second Half: The game began to open up in the second half, with both teams attacking more fluidly with ball in hand. Tactical kicking played a key role by both teams (in particular some booming kicks by Thomas Cochlin), as clever clearances and counter-attacks kept the territory battle finely balanced. Horsham’s backs showcased their sliding defense, with strong cover tackles preventing Chichester from extending their lead. Horsham found a breakthrough with a penalty, opting for the points with Thomas Cochlin taking the kick to bring the score to 3-5. A second penalty, this time slotted through by Harry Peel, edged Horsham ahead at 6-5, setting up a tense final stretch. With the game hanging in the balance with 3 minutes to go, Harry Streeter made a powerful break up the middle, only to be tackled just short of the try line, unfortunately resulting in a crucial turnover. However, Horsham displayed great composure and dogged resilience, with Noah Ashton making a game-winning tackle to dislodge the ball from the Chichester team playing out of their own 22. Horsham quickly capitalized, and two phases later, Harry Dolan powered through to score a decisive last-minute try, sealing an 11-5 victory.
Horsham’s defensive solidity, great tactical awareness against a strong Chichester side in both attack, defence and kicking, along with their team spirit were key in grinding out a tough win against a formidable Chichester team. Their ability to stay composed under pressure ensured they remain unbeaten in what was a thrilling, hard-fought and physical contest, with great (green) heart and passion shown by all in the team.
